Steve Mustain– Roots to World and a Journey in Between
It’s not often that you’ll hear a set open with a traditional Nigerian song, flow through and blend Delta blues, jazz, and folk, then close with some kind of new agey-folkish-classical-jazz song (possibly with a Latin feel). You might wonder if it reminisced Ry Cooder, Mark Knopfler, Cole Porter, Leonard Cohen or John Hiatt. Yes, it may have. A self-proclaimed music traveler, Steve takes you on a stylistic journey that is multi-flavored yet seamless, synthesized from his years of playing and deep appreciation of a wide range of music.
Steve is best known as a composer, guitarist, bandleader and teacher/ mentor of many young musicians in Halifax and beyond. His solo guitar playing was beautifully presented on the album Breeze of Delight, while his world music foray with Neon Mesa offered up a vibrant blend of Latin, African and Tex-Mex. More recently, his focus on songwriting resulted in the album, “In the Morning Free”, which joins his eclectic influences from roots and blues to world music with heartfelt lyrics that range from joy and death to love and loss. On his newest album, “This Ain’t Paradise”, due out in May 2019, he continues to wield his songwriter’s pen and musically digs even deeper into his Missouri and Carolina roots- with Canadian sensibility of course.
This performance will have him mostly wearing his singer/songwriter hat and feature songs from the new and previous album. But be prepared for a stylistic journey, synthesized from his background in traditional folk and blues, rock and jazz, classical guitar and modern classical composition. A dynamic player and performer, he brings these influences together seamlessly and seductively.
Cabot Shores hosts Dinner & Concert events every Thursday and Saturday throughout the summer. Click here to see the full list of concerts happening this year! Sponsored by the Good Health Festival Society.
