More on Margie Beaton and Dawn Beaton
Born and raised in Mabou, both Margie and Dawn grew up immersed in traditional Gaelic music and dance, learning and performing, then recording and traveling, and teaching. These musical sisters released their debut album Taste of Gaelic in 2008. The release of this album led to an invitation to Lorient Interceltique Festival in Lorient, France. From there, these sisters have traveled and taught in Scotland, England, Brazil, China, Ireland and the United States. They won a Nova Scotia Music week nomination and an ECMA win for Roots/Traditional Duo or Group Recording of the Year – 2010.
Margie has taken on active roles with groups like Stòras na h-Òigridh/Treasures of Youth, an endowment fund dedicated to youth seeking financial aid in Gaelic development, and the Celtic Heart of North America, a cultural tourism-based marketing cooperative. Margie also provides leadership at the Gaelic College, where she facilitates cultural learning and assists with the island-wide music festival KitchenFest!
Dawn has worked at the Celtic Colours International Festival since 2009 as Artistic Director and fully programs all 52 shows in the festival. Additionally, Dawn serves on various volunteer boards and makes it a point to volunteer her musical skills to many worthwhile local charities.
