We’ve all experienced a good laugh, one that leaves you breathless and exhilarated with your sides in
stitches, but when was the last time you had one? As children we didn’t need a reason to laugh, but the
stresses of work and pressures of life often overwhelm us and tell us that we need to be serious to be
taken seriously.
Linda Leclerc, teacher and master trainer of Laughter Yoga seeks to inspire the same childlike playfulness
that had us giggling spontaneously and infectiously, in the hopes of promoting wellness, connection and
improving the health of our bodies and minds.

Philosophy
What is a retreat and why would one participate in one?
The word retreat suggests a temporary pulling back for the demands of one’s life. It’s traditional purpose is to create space and time away to focus on something specific – perhaps learn something new, such as a musical instrument  or deepen our understanding or skill of something such as painting, or yoga, or meditation, or connecting with othera around a particular issue. Such a  retreat creates a kind of container that keeps out demands and distractions, allowing you to relax into a different sense of time, focus as much as [...]

More than a month later, we, the staff at Cabot Shores, are still basking in the glow of the good energy generated by the courageous and lively participants of Retreat Yourself, the annual retreat of Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC).  Being young (18-35) and living with a cancer diagnosis isn’t easy – mostly it’s a lonely experience. Connecting with other young survivors is essential and that’s what this retreat was about.

During the retreat, participants had the opportunity to share their personal cancer story;  discuss how cancer affects their emotional wellbeing and their relationships; participate in  group acupuncture and art therapy [...]

What’s My Foot Got To Do With It?

August 27, 2012
Thumbnail image for What’s My Foot Got To Do With It?

Imagine finding out you have a “foreign” object in your foot.
So how did it get there?
Immediately, I remembered being about 5 years old, in my mother’s sewing studio (she designed and made one of a kind clothing), walking around in my socks and catching a sewing needle between the second and third toe of my right foot. Afraid she’d be mad at me if I told her, I remember withdrawing to a corner and working to get the needle out myself.  I was never sure I got it all, but I don’t remember any symptoms pain thereafter.  Until this past [...]

Beginning the Day

At Cabot Shores, the Healing Arts are interspersed into many of the activities available to our guests. Morning Yoga is one of these.  Our experience is that when we begin our day with even a short set of contemplative movement, we are more available to the other activities we engage in throughout the day – be they outdoor or cultural adventures,or simply interacting with loved ones or new friends. Morning Yoga, offered every day before breakfast, consists of easy to learn movements designed to wake up our body and our senses. Anyone can participate in Morning Yoga. Using [...]

Breast Cancer Action Retreat (Nova Scotians Celebrate at Cabot Shores)

October 17, 2011
Hiking the Boardwalk photo by Barb Thompson

A group of eleven vivacious breast cancer survivors and their supporters participated in the first annual Breast Cancer Retreat at Cabot Shores. The retreat was sponsored by BCANS, Cabot Shores and the Good Health Festival Society of Cape Breton Island.
These women knew how to have fun! and how to stretch their limits (i.e. hiking much longer than they thought they could or participating in a night walk in spite of anxieties of all sorts).

Cape Breton women from the Cape Brestoners’ Dragon Boat group easily mingled with city women from Halifax, created good cheer around the dinner table and the bonfire, [...]
