Fiddler Cheye From Colorado Joins The Ceilidh at St. Ann’s
Do you admire those people who bar no limits to life’s journeys and expectations?  We often go to Ceilidhs (concerts/dancing) at the St. Ann’s United Church…and we meet musicians there who have that daring and one of them was a 16 year old named Cheye.

Imagine this  16 year old from Colorado showing up at a traditional Nova Scotia concert and dance gathering (called a ceilidh in Gaelic), going up on stage and taking charge of the fiddle with a world class fiddler- a Celtic Music icon who is pushing 6 foot [...]

The Vikings: First Europeans on Cape Breton?

September 30, 2012

At Cabot Shores, we consider ourselves and other visitors as  “guests” on Cape Breton–with exception of the native Mi’kmaq who, by accounts, were here first.
Talk to Mi’kmaq elders like Albert or Merdena Marshall or our friend John Henry Lafford and you’ll hear that the Mi’kmaq have been here some 10,000 years, way before the Italian–Giovanni Caboto came sailing under the English Flag in the 15th century.  Whether Cabot landed on northern Cape Breton (near what’s called “Cabot’sLanding”, or
Newfoundland/Labrador is not certain.  But we certainly go on the assumption that he was here, and so the Cabot Trail and evenCabot Shores [...]

Still swimmng on Cape Breton–especially the Moose

September 21, 2012
Thumbnail image for Still swimmng on Cape Breton–especially the Moose

Many of our guests want nothing more than to see a Cape Breton moose.

Last week during a Road Scholar Retreat, a group saw all kinds of moose skat on the path to Indian Brook–but no moose.  Then, the next day, Catherine, a guest from San Francisco, came upon one.
Her husband, Nicholas, was skeptical.  “Where’s the picture?”  he said, only half jokingly?
Well, today, another couple, Robert and Christine (of Sydney Australia) were driving the Cabot Trail and visiting Mary Ann Falls.  Just after returning to the Cabot Trail, they stopped at a pond and there it was–a moose, a big bull [...]

Thumbnail image for Sydney’s Margie MacVicar Quoted in CBC News on Breast Cancer Retreat

Margie MacVicar is a grandmother, retired entrepreneur, and member of the Cape Breastoners, a group of Breast Cancer Survivors, and a hero of ours…
It is not just her ability to adapt and survive, it is her spirit of adventure and of generosity.
You see, we set about organizing a Breast Cancer Retreat with Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia, a group based in Halifax and admirably serving all of Nova Scotia, with yearly retreats on mainland Nova Scotia.
The idea of the Cape Breton Retreat was and is to involve Cape Breton breast cancer survivors in a retreat that didn’t require them to [...]

Retreats

Philosophy
What is a retreat and why would one participate in one?
The word retreat suggests a temporary pulling back for the demands of one’s life. It’s traditional purpose is to create space and time away to focus on something specific – perhaps learn something new, such as a musical instrument  or deepen our understanding or skill of something such as painting, or yoga, or meditation, or connecting with othera around a particular issue. Such a  retreat creates a kind of container that keeps out demands and distractions, allowing you to relax into a different sense of time, focus as much as [...]

Thumbnail image for Young Adult Cancer Retreat at Cabot Shores

More than a month later, we, the staff at Cabot Shores, are still basking in the glow of the good energy generated by the courageous and lively participants of Retreat Yourself, the annual retreat of Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC).  Being young (18-35) and living with a cancer diagnosis isn’t easy – mostly it’s a lonely experience. Connecting with other young survivors is essential and that’s what this retreat was about.

During the retreat, participants had the opportunity to share their personal cancer story;  discuss how cancer affects their emotional wellbeing and their relationships; participate in  group acupuncture and art therapy [...]

For the June retreat, the Road Scholars  hiked to waterfalls and along the Atlantic; had guided experiences

local lobster and wood-fired pizza; did Qi Gong and laughing yoga, and learned about the
local wildlife, both from land and on a trip to the Bird Islands, led by
experienced local guides and [...]

Cabot Links opened this summer in Inverness and several guests from
Cabot Shores made the pilgrimage.

From two golf pros visiting from South Carolina, to a retired Scottish physician and son in law filmmaker, to a founder of ESPN
Sports, they each made the trek to both Highland Links in Ingonish and  to more distant Cabot Links, now considered one of the best links
courses on the planet.

With views of the ocean on every hole, it offers the authentic feel of a links course.  As Bob Weeks of Scoregolf says:
“As great a course as Cabot Links will be – and trust me, it will [...]
