Just recently we hosted the Grady family reunion. Eleven siblings and their families – three generations – came to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of the siblings, born in 1963.  With the theme of the 1960′s the family proceeded to party….

As it turned out – Elvis was the birthday boy!

They danced and feasted….

Relaxed and visited….

And after a short night’s sleep were up participating in morning meditation and Qi Gong….

Having Breakfast…..

And then set out to explore the Indian Brook, Church Pond and Beach on skis and snow shoes…..

As an individual who struggles to push themselves through those extra ten minutes on the treadmill,  I’ve got an incredible amount of respect for passionate runners. Over a thousand dedicated marathon-ers flock to the highlands of Cape Breton every May to run one of “the most challanging and spectacular terrains in North America”,  state the relay officials, and I have to agree with them. Cape Breton island offers a host of activities, communities of friendly folk, but most notably, are the incredible and seemingly endless one-of-a-kind views.
Two years ago I was hired as an assistant to Dr. Paul of Cabot [...]

Winter Garden Thriving Inside Despite Blizzard Nemo Outside

Don’t you love it when a piece of trash becomes a treasured item?
Thank goodness I had the presence of mind to realize that  a plastic packaging box that formerly contained a cake brought along by a guest had potential greater than recycling.  I found it again as I was looking for potting soil the other day, outside in an makeshift cold frame we used last spring.
This piece was  perfect as a miniature indoor “greenhouse ” for growing microgreens.

Why is growing a winter garden so exciting to me?  Well, you’d have to spend the winter on this part of Cape Breton [...]

More Than A Memory

My Dad died 10 years ago,  he would’ve been 97 this week and passed a little over a year, before we built Cabot Shores…He was living in California at the time but had been to Cape Breton twice and, as he said during his last days, “I love the Cape”.  And asked me if I wasgoing to settle here…And he’d be happy to know we did!
While he was on Cape Breton,  nature kind of lined up some stunning  things for him to see and do: the Northern lights, a whole bunch of trout he fished for with [...]

Early Morning Fun

January 30, 2013
Thumbnail image for Early Morning Fun

After our morning snow shoeing I lingered outside to box up some kindling. Cosmo who had come along on the trail was hanging around, genereally behaving himself. I kept an eye on him as he tends to take off on not-so-safe adventures out on the ice.
Suddenly, Cosmo became very alert and began running down to the inlet. I followed to see what the fuss was about. He ran across the floating ice to a little island – no barking, just intense physical attentiveness and rooting around the brush.
Suddenly a large dark animal – its body the size of Cosmo, but [...]

In The Spirit of Adventure at Cabot Shores, Past and Present

January 23, 2013

ADVENTURE Definitions

Upon looking for definitions of Adventure and adventurous in Roget’s Thesaurus and in the American Heritage Dictionary, I was struck by the several negative definitions that preceded the more uplifting ones – definitions such as risky or questionable undertaking.  Obviously, this is not the kind of adventure we engage in at Cabot Shores.

A Spirit of Adventure
It’s more about encouraging a Spirit of Adventure. A spirit of adventure embodies qualities such as curiosity,  courage, a willingness to stretch out of one’s comfort zone, inquisitiveness, inclusiveness, a group effort, working together to solve a problem or reach a destination, an open mind, [...]

Meditation at Cabot Shores

During the 2012 season, Cabot Shores began offering daily morning meditation and contemplation practice to our guests and staff.  To our surprise and delight, many people participated.

Join us in mindfulness-awareness meditation and contemplation practice in the Shambhala Meditation tradition.
