When we ask guests what they really like to do at Cabot Shores, we get some surprising
answers…
You’d think it would be walking into the Great Room of Whiff’s  Lodge or looking at the ocean from any
of the 4 chalets…and these are often mentioned…
…but what a lot of guests says is: “it’s the Eagle Feather Ferry”  .
Here it is viewed from the air

Seen from the air, the Eagle Feather crosses Church Pond to the Beach, just about 10 minute walk
from Whiff’s Lodge through the orchard to the edge of the Pnd.
Whether a 91 year old woman

or a band of  kids

or those [...]

Studying at Gampo Abbey

March 21, 2013
Thumbnail image for Studying at Gampo Abbey

In March, we were fortunate to be invited to take part in Shedra, or monastic college, at Gampo Abbey. For two weeks we traveled to Gampo Abbey several times a week.  The journey itself,  a drive on the Cabot Trail through the Cape Breton Highland National Park in winter is spectacular.

More than once, we observed a moose (the same one, we believe) in almost the same location, calmly chewing and regarding us with interest.
Gampo Abbey, N. America’s only Tibetan monastery for Western students, is located off the Cabot Trail, high above the Gulf of St.Lawrence.

Under the guidance of master teachers [...]

Saying Good-bye to the Ice

March 21, 2013
Thumbnail image for Saying Good-bye to the Ice

We’ve been  fortunate to have pack ice in front of Cabot Shores as far as the eye can see. For an entire month it was here, like an expanse of ice sculpture it provided myriad opportunity for exploration and enjoyment. Every day for weeks, we’d snow shoe across the lake out to the beach and the ice.

Particularly spectacular was to enjoy how the sunlight played with it.

So much light, so brilliance, such illumination!  And how quiet the ocean!

Then one day, overnight, it left.
How did it go so quickly?  The temperature hadn’t changed much.  And where did it go?
A couple of [...]

African Dance comes to Cabot Shores

March 20, 2013
Thumbnail image for African Dance comes to Cabot Shores

Anne-Claude Pepin is bringing African Dance to Cabot Shores. As Anne-Claude says: “African Dance is one of the best way to stay in shape. Every part of the body is actively engaged and the heart rate goes up while listening to great percussion music.”
Sounds like a great workout, particularly for this time of the year with spring around the corner. But how about us “older folk” with creaky joints? “Depending how much you abandon yourself to the music,” says Anne-Claude, “it can be quite intense but you can also take it slower by not amplifying the movements as much”. [...]

March 3, 2013
Thumbnail image for Why The Long Face? Laughter Yoga Spreading Smiles To Cabot Shores This May!

We’ve all experienced a good laugh, one that leaves you breathless and exhilarated with your sides in
stitches, but when was the last time you had one? As children we didn’t need a reason to laugh, but the
stresses of work and pressures of life often overwhelm us and tell us that we need to be serious to be
taken seriously.
Linda Leclerc, teacher and master trainer of Laughter Yoga seeks to inspire the same childlike playfulness
that had us giggling spontaneously and infectiously, in the hopes of promoting wellness, connection and
improving the health of our bodies and minds.

Video Family Reunion Review of Cabot Shores on Cape Breton

February 28, 2013
Thumbnail image for Video Family Reunion Review of Cabot Shores on Cape Breton

In every family reunion, there is one hero or heroine who takes on the job of organizing
the event.    Past organizers have said it’s like “herding cats”.
But in the case of the Grady Family, held in dead of winter at Cabot Shores, there were not one but two organizers, the sisters Cathy (found the place and coordinate the people) and Joan who orchestrated with Barbara the not so simple task of planning the food, with many food allegies to work around.
A big part of any event is good food and comfortable lodging.  And then, there is of course:  what else are [...]
