Cape Breton Events: Reasons to Wander

Cape Breton’s events calendar is packed full of rich, cultural adventures and festivities throughout the next few months. I’ve profiled the Island’s lengthy line-up, including some of the most popular annuals. Take a peek below:

Ongoing, Mabou Family Square Dances
Gitty up, and ho down! Every Friday night, The West Mabou Sports Club offers family square dancing from 10pm-1am.

Mar 11-13, Cabot Shores: March Madness
Celebrate the season with our inclusive outdoors adventure weekend. $125 gets you one night’s stay, 2 meals from the bistro, bonfire and festivities, and an escape from the every day! Mar 22, Gaelic Tea & Social
From 2-4pm at the Gaelic College, folks can enjoy tea and Gaelic conversation. Only Gaelic is spoken, but all are welcome.

Apr 1-3, Adult Gaelic Weekend
The Gaelic College will host a Gaelic Weekend featuring TIP (Total Immersion Plus) Workshops for Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced adult students. They will also have Song Workshops, a Storytelling Session, and a Saturday evening Milling Frolic and Ceilidh.

May 28- July 1, Lobsterpaloosa  The title speaks for itself. For over a month, people can enjoy 185 miles of seafood and seafaring traditions! This is a good one, and we at Cabot Shores will be stocking up on our own fresh goodies, courtesy of longtime Cape Breton fisherman, Merrill.

July 1, Canada Day at Fortress of Louisbourg
Free admission today at one of Cape Breton’s biggest historical sites. 2011 also marks the 50th anniversary of the reconstruction of the fortified town.

July 1-3, Stan Rogers Folk Festival
Some of the finest songwriters and performers in North America gather at this festival, in honor of folk music musician, Stan Rogers.  A new generation of powerful songwriters also come together with Stan’s family members, friends and associates not just to share remembrances – but to create new songs and stories.

July 1- Aug 30, Festival de l’Escaouette

July 8-10, Cabot Shores: Good Health Festival

July 23-Aug 8, Bras d’Or Lakes Festival
Canada’s premiere boating, sailing and culture festival- people from all over come to enjoy two amazing weeks of sailing, boating, music, cultural events and other activities in the communities along the shores of the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes!

Oct 7-15, Celtic Colours Cape Breton’s Celtic roots are celebrated with this 9 day International festival. Its featured hundreds of musicians from all over the Celtic world and attracted tens of thousands of visitors to Cape Breton Island. Both locals and tourists can’t get enough.
